The First Committee of the General Assembly (Disarmament and Security) deals, as it name says, “with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community.” This way, it can seek solutions to the challenges in the international security regime. The purpose of the Committee is to establish “general principles of cooperation in the maintenance of international peace and security, including the principles governing disarmament and the regulation of armament.”
DISEC faces many challenges related to the increased information, technology and weapon development on the security of the international community.
The committee generally includes discussions on reduction of military budgets, complete disarmament, nuclear weapon free zones in regions such as Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East, the roles of women in disarmament affairs and international security, and the relationship between disarmament, security and development.
DISEC works closely with the United Nations Disarmament Commission and the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
